That said, as far as puppies go, Cal is pretty good. But, a puppy is a puppy. His saving grace is that he sleeps from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. every night. He wakes up around 10 or 11 to go out, but then after that it's smooth sailing 'til morning. I just wish he could run around the house without being tied up and not destroy everything in sight. The puppy club leader said that by about 4 months they are usually good enough to let loose. Four months is a long ways away.

A Quick Update
Having a puppy is like having a big hairy baby that can crawl twice the speed of a normal baby and is 10 times more destructive. I am tied to the house a lot as Cal's bladder lasts about an hour, two at the very max when he hasn't eaten for a while. Considering the investment of time and energy, I would much rather have a baby, but as you know that's not up to us.

it is a serious amount of work- isn't it?
ReplyDeletedo you have a crate for him?
Hang in there!!! I read a housecleaning guide once that said the number one thing to do is not have pets. Well, duh!
ReplyDeleteAnyways, thanks for getting my french stories, by the way!
Amy- yes, we have a crate. He naps a couple of times during the day and I'll put him in there then so I can be puppy-free for a bit. Yesterday he slept for 2 hours. Other than that, I hate to stick him in there. He does fine tied up as long as he has something to do. But he wants to chew on everything and won't always just stick to his own toys, so I have to be close at hand to correct him when he strays..which is often. As I said, I'd rather be putting in the work on a baby. Much more rewarding. But, hopefully Cal will mature into a great guide dog and then we'll feel like our efforts were worth something.
ReplyDeleteLisa-I loved that housecleaning tip! Ha ha!
Hey, I finally got on today and read all the latest... that's so exciting!! Have you heard about clicker training, it's amazing and very easy to do. I only wish it worked on kids and not just animals. :) By the way I have started to carry ziplocks in the car, we've had a couple situations and it would be nice to have some back-up. Love you guys!
ReplyDeleteGreat to hear from you Erin! I haven't heard about clicker training, but Guide Dogs requires us to use their methods, so their manual is our doggie Bible. Cal's actually doing better all the time. Ha ha, I'm with you on training kids! Hope all is well there!
