First Day of School! (Sort of)

Today is the first day of school!  The kids were in fine spirits last night when we put them to bed, new school clothes all ready in their closets. I was looking forward to fewer bodies around here during the day and fewer "I'm bored's" from Grace.

But it wasn't to be.  Last night, Grace woke up at about 9:30 and threw up.  This was the start of a full eight hour stretch of purging from both ends about every 15 min.  Incidentally, I would highly recommend double beds for any child's room.  I dozed somewhat comfortably next to her all night with bowl, kleenex and mouth swishing water in hand. Poor Gracie!  She seems to get these stomach bugs more than the boys and they wreak havoc with her system.  But I'm glad to report she has now kept down a cup of 7-up and seems to be turning the corner.  I think she'll be back to her old self and ready for school tomorrow.

Spencer, on the other hand, slept well and was excited for school.  He didn't say it in so many words, but he VOLUNTARILY emptied the dishwasher, including Grace's silverware, so I knew it must be the school bug that had gotten him.

Darrel just called to inform me that today is early out.  What?!  I don't recall hearing anything about this.  I suppose I should have known.  I think they do that every year, but it never occurred to me and we certainly didn't get any notice from the school.  I hope the other parents know about it or there are going to be some angry phone calls to the school and/or lots of kids waiting around with no ride home.  So much for the first day of school.

So, it appears tomorrow will be the first real, official whole day of school for 2009.  Happy learning!

  3. I'm glad I wont be sitting by Grace in school tomorrow!!! HA! very wishful thinking Amanda my dear!!! It sounds like you are hoping its a 24 hr bug so that she cant get some school time in! hee hee
SERIOUSLY though.....so sad....she looks miserable. Sorry Grace.
    Spencer looks so handsome..so old.
Hope everything gets better and the rest of you are spared. That is just no fun. A real bummer.

That picture of Grace laying in her bed reminds me of you so much. I dont went to get all mushy but she was definately intended to be your child. You look so similar!!!!

  6. I think the school system takes a half day every chance they get! My kid's first week of school went as follows: Monday 1/2 day, Tues/Wed full day, Thursday 1/2 day, and no school on Friday (which was Pioneer Day). Why didn't we just forget the entire waste of a week and start on the 27th?!?!?!

  7. Amen to all of you! Grace does seem to be feeling better, though not 100%. I think she'll be back to her old self in the morning, though. I don't think she's contagious. She's excited to meet her teacher and see her friends. I'm hoping this is an isolated incident. So far no one else seems to be sick.

And yes, Rach, though sometimes I wonder how I am supposed to survive raising her, Grace is definitely meant to be ours. It's fun that she looks like me.
